Registering the Bareun MCP server in Claude Code
When you register the Bareun MCP server in Claude Code (an AI coding tool for the terminal), the model calls Bareun directly during a conversation to perform Korean morphological analysis and spell checking.
What you need
- A Bareun API key — For issuing keys and usage, see Using the cloud.
- The endpoint address — The Bareun cloud endpoint is
https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp. If you installed the Korean spell checker yourself, use your server's address with/mcpadded (for example,http://localhost:5656/mcp). MCP is available only in Bareun builds that include the spell checker. Installations for morphological analysis only have no/mcpendpoint.
How to register
Add it with one line in the terminal. Choose one of the two authentication methods below.
claude mcp add --transport http bareun https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp \
--header "api-key: YOUR_API_KEY"
This passes the API key directly in a header. There is no separate login step, so it is the simplest.
Register just the address, with no header.
claude mcp add --transport http bareun https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp
Then, when you type /mcp in a conversation, a prompt appears asking you to log in (authenticate) to the Bareun server.
When the browser opens, enter your Bareun API key. After you log in once, Claude Code
keeps the issued credentials, so you do not need to enter them again.
Verifying the connection
- Check the connection status of
bareunwithclaude mcp list. - Type
/mcpin a conversation to see the registered servers and the list of tools (analyze_syntax,tokenize,list_pos_tags,correct_grammar). - If you make a request like "Correct this sentence with Bareun," the model calls Bareun.
Sharing at the project level
If you add --scope project to claude mcp add, the registration is saved in the project's .mcp.json
so your teammates can use it too. In that case, we recommend managing the API key with an environment variable instead of putting it in directly.
Troubleshooting
- Don't see the tools? Check that
/mcpis at the end of the address and that you passed--transport http. - Getting a permission error (401)? Check that the API key is correct and, if you use the header method, that the actual key comes
after
api-key:. If you use OAuth, try logging in again with/mcp. - No spelling correction (
correct_grammar)? MCP is available only in Bareun builds that include the spell checker. A server for morphological analysis only has no/mcpendpoint.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Should I use the header method or OAuth login?
Both authenticate with the same Bareun API key. The header method is simpler for connecting quickly, and OAuth login is convenient if you don't want to leave the key in a configuration file.
Q. Can I register it if I installed the spell checker myself?
Yes. If you installed Bareun with the spell checker, just change the endpoint to your server's address with /mcp (for example,
http://localhost:5656/mcp). However, an installation for morphological analysis only has no /mcp endpoint,
so you cannot use MCP.
