Registering the Bareun MCP server in VS Code
If you connect the Bareun MCP server to chat (agent mode) in VS Code, the model can directly analyze and correct the text or code comments you are editing with Bareun.
What you need
- A Bareun API key: For issuing keys and checking usage, see Using the cloud.
- An endpoint address: For Bareun Cloud, it is
https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp. If you installed the Korean spell checker yourself, use that server's address followed by/mcp(for example,http://localhost:5656/mcp). MCP is provided only by Bareun builds that include the Korean spell checker. Installations that include only morphological analysis do not have/mcp.
How to register
VS Code supports OAuth sign-in for remote MCP servers out of the box. Put the configuration file in the workspace's
.vscode/mcp.json (or in your user profile). You can also add it from the Command Palette with MCP: Add Server.
Just register the address. You do not write the key.
{
"servers": {
"bareun": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp"
}
}
}
When you Start the server, VS Code opens a browser login window the first time it connects. Enter your Bareun API key there and it connects. Once you sign in, VS Code stores the credentials securely, so you do not need to enter them again from then on.
This method is recommended
The API key does not remain in the configuration file (mcp.json). It is stored in VS Code's secure storage.
You can manage signed-in servers under Account menu → Manage Trusted MCP Servers.
To pass the key directly as a header without a login window, use headers.
{
"servers": {
"bareun": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp",
"headers": { "api-key": "YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
}
}
To avoid writing the key in plain text, you can use an input variable.
{
"inputs": [
{ "id": "bareun-key", "type": "promptString", "description": "Bareun API key", "password": true }
],
"servers": {
"bareun": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.bareun.ai:443/mcp",
"headers": { "api-key": "${input:bareun-key}" }
}
}
}
Verifying the connection
- Set chat to agent mode. If
bareunand its tools (analyze_syntax,tokenize,list_pos_tags,correct_grammar) appear on the tool selection screen, it is connected. - You can check the status with Start/Restart above the server entry in
mcp.json. - If you make a request such as "Correct this sentence with Bareun," the model calls Bareun.
Troubleshooting
- The login window does not appear, or appears repeatedly? Try restarting the server, and check that the address ends with
/mcp. - Can't see the tools? Check that chat is in agent mode and that the server has been started.
- Permission error (401)? With the header method, check that the key is correct. With OAuth, check that you signed in again. If you clear the server's authentication once from the trust management menu and then sign in again, it reconnects cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Q. What do I enter when I click "Sign in" in VS Code?
Enter your Bareun API key in the browser login window. Bareun identifies users by API key, so the value you enter in the login window is the API key.
Q. Can I use it without writing the key in mcp.json?
Yes. With the OAuth sign-in method, the key does not remain in the configuration file and is stored in VS Code's secure storage.
Even with the header method, you can keep the key separate by using an input variable (${input:...}).
