The 47-tag POS table
The POS system used by Bareun follows the standard of the National Institute of Korean Language.
The number in the rightmost column of the table below ranges from 1 to 47.
Internally, protocol buffers store the value as this number.
Depending on how you output the result or which programming interface you use, it appears as a string.
By default, you can have it displayed as a string.

Bareun's own tagging guidelines
Differences between the National Institute guidelines and the Bareun guidelines
For some word forms, Bareun set its own tagging guidelines and revised the training data. Where analysis was impossible, the data was revised in a reasonable way to make it analyzable. Bareun also accepts exceptions for variants of expressions that are common in spoken Korean, and was trained on data that was added (or revised) so those can be analyzed. Examples follow. (Urimalsaem is the NIKL Open Korean Dictionary.)
| Example word | National Institute | Bareun | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 누가 (who, subject) | 누구/NP+가/JKS, JKC | 누/NP+가/JKS, JKC | Treating the interrogative as '누' rather than restoring it to '누구' makes analysis easier |
| 아무것 (anything) | 아무것/NNG | 아무것/NP | The National Institute output is NNG throughout, but Urimalsaem lists it as a pronoun, so we follow Urimalsaem |
| 어찌되다 (to become somehow) | 어찌/MAG+되/XSV | 어찌/MAG+되/VV | '어찌되다' is not registered as a word in Urimalsaem, so it is treated as adverb + verb |
| 욕하다 (to curse) | 욕/NNG+하/VV | 욕/NNG+하/XSV | Urimalsaem lists it as '욕-하다', and '-하다' is a suffix we analyze, so it is treated as noun + suffix |
| 숫자+기생(期生) (number + Nth-class member) | 숫자/SN+기생/NNG | 숫자/SN+기/NNG+생/XSN | In Urimalsaem '기' is a noun and '-생(生)' is a suffix we analyze, so it is split accordingly |
| 카드론 (card loan) | 카드/NNG+론/NNG | 카드론/NNG | The National Institute guidelines say that when both parts are foreign words and neither can be treated as a proper or common noun, they are handled as one unit, so we handle it as one |
| 학과명 (department names) | OO학+과 | OO학과/NNG | Even for names not in Urimalsaem, such as '국어정보학과', we revise to '국어/NNG+정보학과/NNG' in line with headwords like '언론^정보학과'. Urimalsaem has '사진^영상학과', so splitting '영상학과' into '영상학+과' under the National Institute guidelines is unreasonable, and we do not follow it |
| VV-고프다 (VV + 'want to') | Not in the National Institute corpus | '-고프-' in forms such as '먹고프다' is treated as XSA | |
| 십시오 (polite imperative ending) | 시/EP+ㅂ시오/EF | 십시오/EF | The National Institute output is not consistent, but Urimalsaem lists it as a single EF |
| Forms containing -대, -래 | X | Forms such as '-대, -대도, -대서, -래, -래도, -래서' used as connective endings are listed in Urimalsaem as contracted forms ('줄어든 말'), so they are analyzed as one unit | |
| Whether to restore spoken forms | Restored to written forms | Spoken forms are accepted | Examples: 노다 (놓다), 나다 (낳다, 낫다), 너다 (넣다), 촌시렵다 (촌스럽다), 바끄다 (바꾸다), etc. |
